Finishing the basement in our Milton MA home has been on our list to-do’s for quite some time now. While we were in the process of shopping and researching, we knew exactly what we were looking for out of the currently unused basement space. My husband and I were looking for a company that specializes in finishing basements and could give us the look we were looking for in a new finished basement. It was important for us to have the same look as the rest of the house with walls, ceilings and flooring that matched the look of the other walls, ceilings and floors in our home. A livable space that would add value to our home (certainly not de-value the home), that provide a return on our investment if we are to sell the house down the line, and serve us and our (expanding family) well for years to come with comfort and style. We often find ourselves hosting friends and family frequently so it was important guests would be able to gather in this space. After comparing basement companies around the area (Boston/South Shore), and getting multiple quotes, it was clear that when we came across KAKS Basement Finishing and Design that they were able to meet all of our criteria and in some ways they exceeded our criteria! From start to finish, the team at KAKS were easy to work with, transparent with what was getting done and when, and their professionalism impressed us! The owner was very knowledgeable about the high quality materials that he would be installing into our home and answered all of our (many) questions with confidence. Now living in the space and the kids having multiple playdates with their friends for almost one full year, it looks as great as it did on the first day it was installed. Knowing that the materials will not deteriorate and mold & mildew or flooding will never be an issue gives us peace of mind. Their warranties are unbeatable, their customer service is unbeatable, and they have our seal of approval! Anyone who is in the market for a finished basement should look no further than KAKS Basement Finishing and Design! Believe me I will be promoting them all over social media! | ||
local South Shore basement remodeling contractor
“I want someone to finish my basement, but I don’t want the basic, put-up-walls-and-leave kind of basement finishing company. I want someone to come in my house, and tell me what they really can do with my basement, upscale design, a friendly, comfortable meeting. Please someone share your ideas with me, what are my options?!” exclaimed Marc.
While talking with my old friend Marc last month at the Hanover Starbucks.. he filled me in on the family, and about having a few basement finishers to the house.
I had to pass onto him that I knew of a local South Shore basement remodeling contractor from up the street that focuses on custom building. “It seems they range from specialty high-end custom stuff to simpler designs, depending on what you want, they can do it.” I said. Marc repeated, “I really want the mold and mildew proof quality – and custom look I want, I want a designer to talk to, teach me something that I don’t know.”
~
Now let’s fast forward to Halloween night, I bumped into Marc with the kids in the neighborhood out trick or treating. “The basement’s done, dude! You gotta come over and check this mancave out!” Marc was pumped about it, and now I was too.
“When should I stop over?” I asked.
“Game day, bro.”
”The kids have their own unique playroom entrance and tv, and me and the wife have a huge built-in, tv room with crazy new lighting, you just gotta see it to believe you’re in a basement. It’s nicer than my upstairs! I could not be happier with the finished product. Dude, the Patriots are on next Sunday.”
“Right on!” said I. (I couldn’t be happier either) “See you then!”
GAME ON.
Finished basement in Mashpee Massachusetts

Mashpee basement renovation
This finished basement in Mashpee Massachusetts was finished about 5 years ago using wood studs, fiberglass insulation & drywall.
Here’s the story.
The homeowner called us and asked if we would be interested in taking a look at her basement. After our conversation we decided to go to Mashpee Massachusetts to evaluate the space. During the evaluate I met with the homeowner and her parents. She explained that they would like for the parents to be able to utilize the existing space in the basement. Because they were getting older and the house that they are currently living in is getting to be just too much, and the homeowner would feel a lot more comfortable knowing that her parents were with her and she would be able to care for them. Their initial ideas was to use the existing space and maybe just configure it a little bit different adding a bathroom a Living room etc but they had concerns. (Mold) the homeowner explained that she had the space built about five years ago using a general contractor, after just a short time she never used the space because she complained about slight headaches and could smell a musty moldy smell. She went on to explain that she did not feel comfortable having her elderly parents living in a space with these conditions, so how do we fix it? I explained to her that the materials used in the basement by the general contractor were the wrong materials to use, and the only way to get rid of it would be to start over and rip it all out. This is not what she wanted to hear, she was devastated, I spent all that money with the general contractor and now you’re telling me that it is no good? As we concluded I told her that I would come up with a price to refinish the space with everything that she asked for. About 3 days later I gave her the price immediately she asked if we could meet again. I said sure not a problem would you like to meet in our showroom in Hanover Massachusetts? She replied with yes that would be great. As it turns out her parents are from Hingham Massachusetts the next town over how convenient. After reviewing the layout, pricing and materials they decided that the best thing to do was to start over from scratch & move forward with Kaks. They signed on the spot.

Great Basement Finishing Contractors Don’t Need High Pressure Sales Tactics
If you’re thinking of having your basement converted into a home gym, or transformed into an apartment for your adult children or in-laws, or need the space to run your business, chances are that you already know there are a lot of basement finishing contractors in the Boston area. Figuring out how to tell which one is the right company to work on your home becomes easier when you keep these pointers in mind:
High pressure sales tactics are a big red flag! No matter what you’re shopping for, intense high pressure sales tactics are always a bad sign. Be very wary when you’re told special incentive pricing will only be available if you decide immediately; you should never feel pressured to sign on the dotted line immediately. Basement renovations are a significant investment. It’s worth taking the time to make a good decision. Don’t let high pressure sales tactics force you into a decision you’ll regret later.
Check references & previous projects A reputable Boston basement refinishing company will be happy to show you pictures of other projects they’ve done. In some instances, you may even be able to tour finished basement renovation projects. As a best practice, it’s always great to look at projects that are similar in nature to the project you’re considering – in other words, if you want a new home gym, you want to see other home gyms this company has done. Ask for references, and then call or email those people with your questions about the basement finishing contractor. If a contractor balks at either showing you previous projects or connecting you with satisfied customers, run, don’t walk, away!
The Restful Retreat I Was Looking For Was Much Closer Than I Ever Imagined
“I work in a busy newsroom,” Matt explained. “It’s a very noisy, active environment – even when there’s no big story to cover, we still have to get a show on the air every single night. So there’s constant pressure to go, go, go.” Things don’t calm down much when the father of three returns to his Boston home at the end of the day. “Toddlers have one speed: fast. And they have one volume: extra loud.”
Both Matt and his wife Celina were looking for a way to add a little peace and quiet to their lives. “Everyone needs a space where they can just take a deep breath and decompress,” Matt explained. “Back in the day, my Dad had the den to retreat to. But we didn’t have that kind of room in our house.”
“We started looking into having our basement remodeled after I saw what my brother-in-law did with his home,” Celina said. “He went the typical man-cave route with a huge TV, Patriots decor and a dedicated beer fridge,” she laughed. “I thought we could take the same idea, but have it be a little classier and more reflective our lifestyle.”
Finding a Boston basement finishing contractor was the first step. “It was important to me to find a company that specialized in basement transformations,” Matt said. “Every contractor tells you they can do it, but when you start asking questions, they have to admit they’ve never actually finished a basement before. I wanted someone with lots of experience.”
“We wanted a comfortable space where we could just relax. Watch a TV show that didn’t feature animated singing penguins or even read a book,” Celina said.
“Or do absolutely nothing at all,” Matt said. Their basement finishing contractors also built in storage closets and cabinetry, helping the family use the space to truly get organized. “It’s really been one of the best decisions we’ve ever made,” he added. “We use this room every single day. It’s helped us tremendously to have a place to go when the stress levels get too high – without actually having to leave the house! Strongly recommended for any parents of active children.”
